Field Wash Information

Finish Description:
Dry Matte: Transparent stain with a matte finish

Strike Offs:
Our hand-painted samples represent some of our favorite color combinations. However, if you would like to customize your order, we will be happy to produce a strike off made to your individual specifications. Strike offs are charged at the regular hand-painted prices and take approximately two weeks to complete. For information on specifying a custom hand-painted order, please see the Hand-Painted Custom Orders page of our Product Fact Sheet.

Color Range:
Glazes and Field Washes are more of an art than a science. While we follow exact formulas and practice meticulous procedures for mixing, applying and firing glazes and stains, each outcome is different. To assist you in your selection process, we have developed a numeric Color Range ranking system of 1 - 5. The lower numbers represent the least amount of range while the higher numbers represent more variation and spunk.  Please consult the charts prior to making your final selections.  If you are interested in a Glaze or Field Wash that exhibits a higher degree of range, we recommend you request a current set of range samples.

Field Washes:
Field Washes are penetrating stains that are fired into our durable stoneware body. Each tile is hand-dipped to give a great deal of character and range similar to watercolors. Unlike glazes, Field Washes absorb into the body of the tile rather than sitting on top, creating a dry, matte finish. Field Wash tiles are intended for interior applications - both vertical and horizontal. They are classified as semi-vitreous (having water absorption of more than 3.0%, but less than 7.0%) and are not intended for use in wet areas (i.e. showers, steam rooms, swimming pools and exterior areas).

Sealing your Tile:
Prior to grouting, all Field Washed tiles must be sealed with a high quality penetrating sealer to avoid grout haze and prevent unwanted marks and stains. Please consult your place of purchase or installer for more information on penetrating sealers and be sure to follow all instructions carefully.
